On a bustling stretch of North Lincoln Avenue, a testament to Chicago’s architectural legacy stands proudly. This isn’t just another building. This is the Krause Music Store. Its intricate terra-cotta facade, a masterpiece designed by the renowned architect, Louis Sullivan, immediately draws your eyes. This small structure, built in 1922, was Sullivan’s swan song, his final architectural creation before his death in 1924.

The Krause Music Store, commissioned by businessman William P. Krause, was originally envisioned as a combined storefront and residence. Krause, a purveyor of pianos and phonographs, wanted a space that reflected his passion for music. The design was entrusted to William C. Presto, a former draftsman for Sullivan. Recognizing the magnitude of this project, Presto reached out to his old mentor, offering him the chance to design the facade.

Sullivan, despite facing challenging times, poured his heart into this final project. The result is a stunning display of Sullivan’s signature “jewel box” style. The intricate details, the ornate “K” representing Krause, and the projecting window that once showcased musical instruments all speak to Sullivan’s meticulous artistry. Step closer, and you’ll notice something fascinating. Some of the original terracotta blocks, unused and forgotten, were rediscovered in the property’s yard decades later, silent witnesses to history.

Today, the Krause Music Store stands as a testament to both architectural brilliance and the enduring spirit of Chicago. This small building on Lincoln Avenue is a treasure trove of history and a reminder of the power of artistic vision.
