Did you know the Krähenteich in Lübeck boasts a history spanning over 150 years? This isn’t just any pond. It’s a beloved natural swimming area a green oasis nestled right in the heart of Lübeck’s historic old town. Generations of Lübeckers have sought refreshment in its waters. The Krähenteich has witnessed the ebb and flow of time. It has adapted to changing tides.

Originally these were bleaching meadows along the Wakenitz River. The straightening of the Wakenitz for the Elbe-Lübeck Canal inadvertently created the Krähenteich. The river now flows beneath the canal before emptying into this charming pond. Imagine the elegant wooden bathing establishment of the late 19th century. Lübeckers bathed here separated strictly by gender. Victorian in style it featured walkways pavilions even towers.

This wasn’t always a place for swimming. Before it was a bathing area the area served as a laundry spot. A steam laundry operated nearby. It needed space. A section of the old city wall had to be sacrificed for its expansion. The laundry thrived until it moved in the 1990s. Its old buildings stood empty for years before being repurposed.

The Krähenteich itself underwent a transformation in 1954. The old wooden structure had become dilapidated. A new building for the entrance and changing rooms was constructed. It retained the charm of its time. Even the connecting footbridge linking both sides of the pond existed well into the 1980s. Imagine strolling across it following the sun’s path.

Unfortunately the removal of the bridge and the irregular opening hours led to decline. It became a neglected spot. The main entrance even closed in 1998. The Krähenteich was nearly lost. Fortunately local residents saved it. They formed a support association. Through their efforts and negotiations the Krähenteich reopened in 2001. Today it’s better than ever. It features a sandy beach a floating sauna and improved facilities. It’s truly a testament to community spirit and the enduring appeal of the Krähenteich. So take a moment soak it all in. This little pond represents so much more than just water. It embodies the enduring heart of Lübeck itself.
