“445 megawatts of pure power.” Standing here in front of Kraftwerk Mittelsbüren, it’s hard to grasp the sheer force this plant generates. While an older power station once stood here, Kraftwerk Mittelsbüren as we see it today was born from a change of plans. Originally, a much larger project was envisioned, a 900-megawatt giant with a billion-euro price tag. However, rising costs led to its cancellation in 2007. From these ashes, a new plan arose. Instead of coal, a decision was made to embrace cleaner technology. Kraftwerk Mittelsbüren, a 445 MW combined cycle plant fueled by natural gas, was commissioned in December 2016. This powerhouse doesn’t just power homes; it has a special contract with Deutsche Bahn, providing them with a significant portion of their electricity. It’s a testament to how Germany balances its energy needs with environmental responsibility. As we stand here, listening to the hum of industry, we’re witnessing a key player in Bremen’s energy landscape.
