Picture this a bustling valley now known as Koşuyolu. Centuries ago it was a very different place. It’s said to have been an ancient racecourse a place where chariots thundered and horses galloped.
Koşuyolu a neighborhood in Kadiköy Istanbul has a rich history. This wasn’t always a residential area. For a long time it served other purposes. During the Byzantine era it may have been used for hunting or perhaps more horse races.
In 1588 things changed slightly. Kızlarağası İbrahim Ağa built a small mosque a fountain and a namazgah. This marked the first permanent settlement in the area. But hunting and horse racing didn’t stop. They continued throughout the Ottoman era.
Koşuyolu’s name itself is interesting. It means “running place”. This name came from a three-day games ceremony organized by Pehlivan İbrahim Paşa in the early 19th century. The meadows here were also used as pasture for horses belonging to the Ottoman palace and army. They also served as a military training ground.
Residential development only started in 1951. The Koşuyolu Emlak Bank Houses a large development of low-rise houses marked this significant change. Since the 1960s Koşuyolu has transformed further. Green spaces have reduced while building density has increased. The population itself has changed from lower and middle-income residents to upper-middle and upper-income groups.
