In the heart of Korumburra, the Korumburra War Memorial stands as a silent sentinel. It whispers stories of courage, sacrifice, and the enduring spirit of a community. The Korumburra War Memorial isn’t just a monument. It’s a living testament to the men and women who served their country in times of conflict. It commemorates those from the district who served and died in World War One and World War Two. The original dedication, unveiled in 1922 by Brigadier General Elliott, honored the local heroes of the Great War. The names of 165 men from the Shire of Poowong & Jeetho are etched into the stone. They “nobly fought & sacrificed their lives in the cause of freedom & Empire during the Great War of 1914 – 1919.” Later, the memorial was updated to include those who served in World War Two. The Korumburra War Memorial, nestled in Coleman Park on Queen Street, remembers more than just the fallen. A plaque honors those who served in all conflicts and peacekeeping operations since 1945. Another plaque lists the names of those from both World Wars who were not initially included. These additions ensure that the Korumburra War Memorial continues to evolve as a comprehensive tribute to the region’s service personnel. The memorial holds within its stones the echoes of lives cut short. Private VX7496, born in 1904. Privates with service numbers 1363, 1755, 4134, 4636, and 3507. Second Lieutenant 1040. Gunner 1724A. These are just a few of the individuals whose stories are woven into the fabric of the Korumburra War Memorial. Their sacrifices remind us of the cost of freedom and the importance of remembrance. The Korumburra War Memorial stands as a poignant reminder. It serves as a place for reflection, gratitude, and a commitment to never forget the sacrifices made for peace.
