Unearthed secrets whisper from the porous rock. Welcome to Korakonero a sprawling ancient necropolis outside Rhodes city. Here beneath the sun-drenched earth lie the final resting places of generations. These are not simple graves. They are elaborate burial complexes. Many date back to the late Hellenistic and Roman periods.
Korakonero is more than just a cemetery. It’s a testament to funerary artistry. Imagine the skilled artisans meticulously carving these subterranean chambers. They created elegant architectural fronts. Arched colonnades and columns support architraves adorned with metopes and triglyphs. These details mimic temple facades. The deceased were placed in cists cut into the chamber walls.
Were these grand tombs for wealthy families? Or perhaps for revered religious groups? Historians are still unsure. The area’s history begins long before these elaborate burials. It was originally a quarry. The soft poros rock was easily worked. The very stone used to create the tombs was once extracted from this very spot.
The Italian Archaeological School unearthed and restored these remarkable sites. That was before World War II. They painstakingly reassembled altars and stelai. They placed them atop the burial chambers where they were originally found. Their work allowed us to see Korakonero as it might have appeared centuries ago.
Beyond the subterranean chambers lie other remarkable features. A peristyle court with colonnades surrounds a tomb complex. A relief depicting figures carved into a vertical rock face hints at a funerary sanctuary. Along an ancient road connecting the city to the countryside. More burial complexes are carved into the rock faces. Rectangular tombs for interments sit alongside smaller cists for cinerary vases and ossuaries. Rectangular recesses held grave stelai. Complete chambers contained additional tombs.
Above ground burial complexes have bases and foundations for cylindrical funerary altars. Built tholos tombs round structures with domed roofs also dot the landscape. Each tomb tells a story a fragment of Rhodes’ rich history. Korakonero reveals the careful attention given to the deceased. It reflects their beliefs and their society’s values. It’s a captivating journey through time.
