In 1927, a grand stadium rose in the Melbourne suburb of Toorak. This was Kooyong Stadium, a place destined to become synonymous with Australian tennis. Kooyong Stadium hosted the Australian Open, etching its name into the annals of tennis history. From 1972 to 1987, Kooyong Stadium was the permanent home of the Australian Open. It was the last Australian Open venue to feature the elegant grass courts, before the tournament transitioned to the hard courts of Melbourne Park in 1988. Even today, the spirit of tennis lives on at Kooyong Stadium. It’s the proud host of the Kooyong Classic, an exhibition tournament that keeps the legacy alive.

Kooyong Stadium has witnessed epic Davis Cup battles. Think back to the 1986 Davis Cup Final. Australia triumphed over Sweden, two-time defending champions, in a thrilling 3-2 victory. More recently, in 2016, Kooyong Stadium hosted a Davis Cup tie against the USA. A portable grass court was specially installed for the occasion.

Kooyong Stadium wasn’t just for tennis. Music legends graced its stage. Elton John performed there in 1971. Led Zeppelin rocked the stadium in 1972. Black Sabbath and the Rolling Stones followed in 1973. Bob Dylan captivated audiences in 1986, and David Bowie in 1987.

Kooyong Stadium has seen transformations over the years. Initially, it could hold a staggering 15,000 spectators. After renovations in 2019, its capacity was adjusted to around 5,000. This created a more intimate, “boutique” atmosphere, while preserving its historical charm. Today, Kooyong Stadium stands as a testament to Australia’s rich tennis heritage. It is more than just a stadium. It is a place where legends were made, and history was written.
