The Kooyong Lawn Tennis Club stands as a testament to Australia’s love affair with the sport. It has a history as one of the world’s most prestigious tennis clubs. The club was established in 1892. But its story truly began to unfold with the construction of the Kooyong Stadium.
Picture this: It’s 1927. The roar of the crowd is deafening. The first horseshoe-shaped seating level of the concrete stadium is complete. This is ready to host the Australian Championships. Gerald Patterson wins. It is the longest final singles match ever played at Kooyong.
For decades, Kooyong was the heart of Australian tennis. From 1972 to 1987, it served as the permanent venue for the Australian Open. Imagine the legendary clashes on these grass courts. Names like Newcombe and Connors battling it out. The world watched.
Kooyong witnessed Australia’s dominance in the Davis Cup. The stadium hosted several ties and finals. In 1986, Australia defeated Sweden. It was a memorable victory. Pat Cash clinched the win against Mikael Pernfors on the third day.
The atmosphere at Kooyong was electric. The stadium could hold up to 15,000 spectators at its peak. Temporary grandstands boosted this further. The cheers reverberated around the court. Every serve and volley intensified.

The Kooyong Lawn Tennis Club has undergone several renovations. In 2019/20, the upper grandstand sections were removed. This opened up the arena. It allowed for the construction of new facilities. The stadium now holds around 5,000 spectators.
Even with these changes, the spirit of Kooyong remains. The club still boasts 26 grass courts. There are also 22 all-weather en tout cas courts and 3 plexicushion courts. The Kooyong Classic continues to draw crowds each year.
