A portable church. Can you imagine that? That’s how Koonung Heights Uniting Church began its story. This very spot in Mont Albert North held a temporary structure. It was dedicated on February 17 1952. A humble beginning for a church that would later grow and evolve.
Koonung Heights Uniting Church isn’t just a building. It’s a vibrant community. It’s a place where people of different ages and backgrounds gather. They share their faith and their lives. Generations have worshipped here. They’ve celebrated joys and faced challenges together. Some have been members for years. Others are newer arrivals. The church welcomes everyone. But the history goes deeper. Think of the dedication ceremonies. The laying of the foundation stones. Prime Minister Robert Menzies himself laid one. That was on March 28 1953. Another stone was laid by Reverend H Clarnette. He was the President of the Conference. These weren’t just symbolic acts. They represented a shared commitment to faith and community.
The church wasn’t always called Koonung Heights Uniting Church. It started as Koonung Methodist Church. Later the congregation of St Columba’s Uniting Church joined in May 2014. It’s a story of merging histories and strengthening bonds.
Every Sunday morning at 10 am. The church doors open. A relaxed style of worship welcomes all. People connect with God. They hear the good news of the Gospel. The first Sunday of the month is special. Holy Communion is celebrated. Morning tea follows the service. It’s a chance to chat and connect with fellow worshippers. It’s also a chance for children and youth to participate in age-appropriate activities.
