Founded by a remarkable woman for women in need, Koon Seng Ting Temple stands as a testament to resilience and compassion. Koon Seng Ting, meaning “Hall of Formation or Completion of the Earth,” started as a simple attap house. It blossomed into a two-story temple in 1881. Teh Chit Yee, a Teochew woman, envisioned a sanctuary for majies (celibate women) and abandoned girls. In a time when sons were favored, Koon Seng Ting offered shelter and hope. This legacy continues, with women primarily serving as caretakers of the Koon Seng Ting Temple. Koon Seng Ting Temple, along with its neighbor Ban Siew San Kuan Imm Tong, became a spiritual anchor for immigrants arriving in Telok Blangah in the late 19th century. These immigrants, hailing from Hokkien, Cantonese, and Hainanese communities, formed a vibrant kampung around the hill. Koon Seng Ting Temple’s architecture reflects this unique blend of cultures. Although founded by a Teochew woman, the temple predominantly showcases Hokkien influences. This architectural choice acknowledges the large Hokkien presence in the area. Perched midway up Ban Siew San Hill, the temple adheres to traditional geomancy principles. Higher ground behind a building is considered highly auspicious. The temple’s vibrant facade adds a splash of color to the modern HDB estate. Subtle 19th-century European touches further enrich its aesthetic. Koon Seng Ting and Ban Siew San stand as testaments to the area’s rich history. They offer a glimpse into the lives and beliefs of early immigrants. The temple’s two-story structure, uncommon for temples of its time, enhances its grandeur. The two main buildings are seamlessly connected, without an internal air-well. This unique design further sets Koon Seng Ting Temple apart.
