Ever wondered where a pope was elected outside of Italy? Right here at the Konzil in Konstanz. This building has witnessed more than 600 years of history. It stands as a testament to Constance’s diverse past.

Let’s step back in time to the early 15th century. Europe was in turmoil. Three popes claimed the throne of Peter. Christianity was divided. Conflict spread across the continent. In response, spiritual and secular leaders gathered here. They convened the Council of Constance from 1414 to 1418.

The Council of Constance was a pivotal event. It aimed to resolve the Papal Schism. The schism had plagued the Catholic Church for decades. The council fathers sought to restore unity. They wanted to address pressing theological and political issues.

Imagine this hall filled with dignitaries. Cardinals, bishops, and theologians debated fiercely. National blocs formed. They voted on critical matters. England, France, Italy, and Germany each had a voice. Even the Poles, Hungarians, Danes, and Scandinavians joined in.

King Sigismund played a crucial role. He was the Holy Roman Emperor. He arrived in Constance in 1414. Sigismund influenced the council’s course. He pushed for the abdication of all papal claimants.

The Council of Constance faced a complex situation. It had to deal with three rival popes. Gregory XII in Rome, Benedict XIII in Avignon, and John XXIII. The council recommended that all three abdicate. Then a new pope could be chosen.

Gregory XII sent representatives. They had full powers to summon and preside over an Ecumenical Council. They also presented his resignation. This paved the way for ending the schism.

On November 11 1417, a momentous event occurred here. Cardinal Otto von Colonna was elected as Pope Martin V. The election took place in the upper hall of the Konzil building. It was the last papal election outside Italy.

The Council of Constance addressed other important matters. It condemned Jan Hus as a heretic. Hus was a theologian and reformer from Bohemia. He was summoned to Constance under safe conduct. But he was found guilty of heresy and executed.

The council also dealt with national sovereignty. It addressed the rights of pagans. These issues arose from a conflict between Lithuania, Poland, and the Teutonic Knights.

The Konzil building itself has a rich history. It was built between 1388 and 1391. The city of Constance built it as a warehouse and transshipment center. Arnold oversaw the construction.

In 1968 the Konzil building was renovated. It became a conference and festival venue. The renovation preserved the historical structure. Today, the Konzil building still rests on 14 huge oak supports.

The Council of Constance shaped European history. It solved theological and political issues through dialogue. This approach laid the foundation for the European idea.

Today, the Konzil continues to be a place of encounter. It hosts events and offers stunning views of Lake Constance. From the Konzil, you can see the Alps and the harbor.

As you stand here remember the Council of Constance. Recall the debates, the election, and the historical significance of this place. The Konzil remains a symbol of Constance’s enduring legacy.
