Bonn’s lifeline to the south that’s the Konrad-Adenauer-Brücke. This bridge isn’t just steel and concrete. It’s a story etched in time. It connects Bonn’s city with Ramersdorf and the Rhine’s right bank.
The Konrad-Adenauer-Brücke is locally known as the Südbrücke. It stands as the southernmost of Bonn’s three Rhine bridges. Imagine Konrad Adenauer himself. During his time as a Rhöndorf resident he relied on a ferry to cross the river. He never saw this bridge that now bears his name.
Construction began in 1967. The Konrad-Adenauer-Brücke opened to traffic on December 11, 1972. The bridge spans 770 meters. It gracefully crosses the Rhine and its adjacent lands. The bridge’s construction was part of the Federal Garden Show concept. This major event took place in Bonn in 1979.
Did you know a competition was held in 1969/70 to design this bridge? The Konrad-Adenauer-Brücke boasts a 39.20-meter wide superstructure. This accommodates the A 562 motorway. Plus, there are Stadtbahn lines 66 and 68. Pedestrians and cyclists also enjoy dedicated paths on both sides.
The Konrad-Adenauer-Brücke stretches generously over the Rheinaue on the left bank. On the right bank it ends more abruptly near the junctions for the A 59 and B 42.
Technically speaking the main bridge has a span of 230 meters. The side spans measure 125 meters each. The bridge’s overall width is an impressive 39.20 meters. In fact the bridge is a beam bridge of steel and concrete.
Between October 2003 and January 2005 the bridge underwent extensive renovations. The Konrad-Adenauer-Brücke not only offers passage. It provides stunning views. Look north toward the Federal Quarter. To the southeast you can see the Siebengebirge hills.
Light rail trains glide across the Konrad-Adenauer-Brücke daily. From here you can observe the Rhine flowing.
Originally planners considered naming the bridge after Theodor Heuss. But Konrad Adenauer’s death in 1967 changed those plans. As a respected statesman with close ties to Bonn naming the bridge after him felt appropriate. So the Südbrücke became the Konrad-Adenauer-Brücke.
So as you cross or admire the Konrad-Adenauer-Brücke remember its history. Think of the man it honors. Consider its vital role in connecting Bonn. It is more than just a bridge. It’s a symbol of progress and connection.
