How about a story about a school that helped shape special education? That is Kongevejens Skole. It is not just a place of learning. It’s a place with a long history. Kongevejens Skole is located in Kongens Lyngby. This is in North Zealand. It offers education from kindergarten to ninth grade. The school has a large outdoor area. There are green spaces and a playground. It includes fenced ball fields. The school consists of two buildings.

But there’s more. The school’s story begins before it was even called Sorgenfriskolen. Back in April 1942, Kongevejens Skole housed the municipality’s first three special education classes. There were 27 students in total. The space became too small. In 1945, the special education classes moved to Lindegårdsskolen. There, they expanded to five classes. They had 63 children. Soon, it grew to six classes with 80 children.

The need for a separate school was recognized. In 1949, the red villa “Henriksholm” became Sorgenfriskolen. It is located at Kongevejen 53. Today, it still sits in the schoolyard. The villa had five classrooms. It also had a teacher’s room and an office. There was a gymnasium and a domestic science room. Carpentry and needlework rooms were also included. Space was tight. Every corner was used.

Construction on the actual school building began in 1956. It officially opened in 1958. It was called “the country’s most modern special education school”.

In the following years, the school expanded its services. They added a school psychologist. A speech therapist and a career counselor joined the staff. A physiotherapist was also added. Finally, a recreation center opened in 1968.

The school was renovated in 1999 and 2004. In the latest renovation, Kongevejen 49 became part of the school.

Kongevejens Skole has around 750 students. There are 85 employees. This includes teachers, educators, and administrative staff. The school values creating life-skilled individuals. They want students to be active and responsible contributors to our shared future. Kongevejens Skole strives to give students meaningful school days. This focus is central to their planning and development.

Kongevejens Skole has received good reviews. It averages 4.2 stars. People praise the school’s social and academic environment.

Think about all the children who have passed through these halls. They learned and grew here. Kongevejens Skole continues to evolve. It adapts to meet the needs of its students. It remains a vital part of the community.
