Gazing up at the magnificent facade of Kong Meng San Temple, have you ever wondered about the stories whispered within its walls? Kong Meng San Temple, also known as Phor Kark See Monastery, is Singapore’s largest Mahayana Buddhist temple. It sits on Bright Hill Road, a beacon of serenity amidst the bustling city. Founded in 1920 by Venerable Zhuan Dao, the temple began as a humble two-story building. It housed a shrine room, visitor’s quarters, and accommodations for monks. The temple’s location on Kong Meng San, or Bright Hill, gave it the name we know today. Over the years, generous philanthropists like Aw Boon Haw and Aw Boon Par contributed to its expansion. A grand Dharma Hall, soaring over fifty feet high, was added. The temple expanded significantly under Venerable Seck Hong Choon, who became Chief Abbot in 1943. His vision transformed the temple grounds. It grew from two shrine halls to a complex that includes the awe-inspiring Pagoda of 10,000 Buddhas and prayer halls spanning the size of ten football fields. This pagoda, a blend of Southeast Asian and modern architecture, houses 10,917 Buddha statuettes. Within its main hall sits an eight-meter-high golden Buddha statue. It’s one of Southeast Asia’s largest bronze Medicine Buddha images. Kong Meng San Temple is more than just a place of worship. In 2002, it established a Compassion Fund to help retrenched workers. In 2006, it opened the Buddhist College of Singapore, the nation’s first, offering a bachelor’s degree in Buddhism. The temple has also extended its hand to those in need. In 2008, it raised over $1 million for the reconstruction of schools after the Sichuan earthquake. Kong Meng San Temple continues to bridge generations, launching the English-language magazine “Gum” in 2009 to connect with younger devotees. The temple’s rich history, stunning architecture, and compassionate outreach make it a true gem in Singapore’s cultural landscape.
