How about a story about a school built on sincerity and perseverance? We are standing before Kong Hwa School. It is more than just a school. It is a place steeped in history and tradition.
Kong Hwa School was founded in 1953. The Singapore Hokkien Huay Kuan established it. This was a crucial time after the Japanese Occupation. There was a dire need for education in Singapore. Tan Lark Sye donated the land where Kong Hwa School stands today.
Initially, the school was to be named Kong Chian School. This was after Lee Kong Chian, who donated $300,000. The name also reflected a Chinese proverb. It meant students should be high achievers. They should honor ancestors and benefit future generations.
However, Lee Kong Chian requested a change. He believed philanthropy should be common. It should not be celebrated with a name. So, the school became Kong Hwa School on May 1, 1953.
In 1957, Kong Hwa School became government-aided. This marked a new chapter in its development. Later, the Singapore Hokkien Huay Kuan bought land to build a secondary school wing.
Kong Hwa School temporarily housed Nan Chiau Girls’ High students. This happened while their school was being rebuilt. Later, the Kong Hwa Wing was exchanged for another campus. This campus belonged to Chung Cheng High School.
Kong Hwa School has undergone renovations to improve its facilities. From 1992 to 1996, the school moved to Aljunied Road. This was during its first major upgrading project. The school relocated again in 2010. It moved to Circuit Road until June 2012. This was for another upgrading project.
The school’s culture is rich and vibrant. Boys wear white shirts and khaki shorts. Girls wear white blouses and pleated skirts. The school crest is proudly displayed on their uniforms. Sports Day is a big event. All Singapore Hokkien Huay Kuan schools participate.
The Kong Hwa School building design is based on the I-Ching. This ancient Chinese text emphasizes balanced development. It focuses on morality, wit, health, society, and beauty.
The Main Parade Square features the I-Ching’s hexagrams. The school motto, sincerity and perseverance, faces the square. The amphitheater promotes Western culture through performing arts. The Kong Hwa Garden is a Jiangnan-styled Chinese garden. It inspires students and promotes Chinese culture.
The school’s design balances Eastern and Western influences. This reflects the concept of Yin and Yang. It emphasizes arts and sports equally. There are facilities for table tennis and badminton. There are also rooms for music like the Chinese Orchestra.
The Kong Hwa Very Supportive Parents group enhances the school community. Founded in 1999, it fosters partnerships between parents and the school. They organize workshops and events. They also promote family participation in school life.
The VSP celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2024. This milestone represents years of collaboration. Their activities support the school’s vision. They ensure a holistic education for all students.
