Kong Haakons Kirke isn’t just a church. It’s a piece of history. It was inaugurated in 1958. A gift from Norway to King Haakon VII. The funds were collected to mark his 50th anniversary as King of Norway. Crown Prince Olav laid the foundation stone. Architect Carl Corwin designed this stunning building.

The church is built of stone. It boasts a pointed copper roof. A slender spire reaches towards the sky. Inside there’s seating for 250 people. This place is more than just prayer. It acts as a welfare station for the Norwegian Maritime Directorate. It serves Norwegian seafarers in Copenhagen and Køge.

Kong Haakons Kirke is incredibly popular for weddings. Over 100 Norwegian couples say ‘I do’ here each year. It even plays a crucial role in emergency situations. In times of crisis involving Norwegians this church serves as a central meeting point.

In 2008 Queen Margrethe and King Harald attended a jubilee service here. It was the church’s 50th anniversary. A truly special occasion. A 2018 renovation modernized the building. New lighting designed by Bertelsen & Scheving Arkitekter enhances its beauty.

On the 17th of May each year. Norwegians in Copenhagen gather here. They celebrate their national day. During the Christmas season a traditional Christmas market takes place. It offers festive decorations handicrafts and food.
