The Kong Chow Funerary Structure is all that remains of a bustling Chinese section within the old City Cemetery. From 1870 to 1898 this cemetery served a diverse population. Chinese Japanese French and many other groups found their final resting place here. An estimated ten thousand souls lie beneath the park’s manicured greens. The Kong Chow chapel hosted the ceremonies for those buried nearby. Prayers incense offerings of food and symbolic paper money were all part of the ritual. These ceremonies sent deceased Chinese migrants on their journeys into the afterlife.

The Kong Chow structure wasn’t just a place of mourning. It was a hub for the community. It provided a space for grieving families. It also served as a temporary resting place for those who hoped to return to their homeland. The bones of thousands were eventually disinterred for transport back to China. Many others however remained.

Imagine the scene. The air thick with the scent of incense. Mourners gather to pay their respects. The sounds of chanting fill the air. The Kong Chow structure bears witness to their sorrow. It provides a solemn space to remember. It offers a sense of peace.
