The Garuda’s wings. That’s what they call the roof of the Komplek MPR dan DPR RI. Have you seen it?

This magnificent complex isn’t just a building. It’s the beating heart of Indonesian legislature. Here the People’s Consultative Assembly MPR the House of Representatives DPR and the Regional Representative Council DPD convene. They shape the laws of this vast nation. This very spot has witnessed pivotal moments in Indonesian history.

Construction began on March 8 1965 under President Sukarno. He envisioned a grand building for the Conference of the New Emerging Forces CONEFO. CONEFO a rival to the United Nations never materialized. Sukarno’s ambitious project however continued. The coup attempt of September 30 1965 significantly hampered construction. The project’s purpose changed. It would become the home of the Indonesian parliament.

Under President Suharto construction resumed. The main conference building was finished in March 1968. Other buildings followed. The complex was finally completed in February 1983. It’s a testament to perseverance. It’s a symbol of Indonesia’s enduring spirit.

The sprawling complex comprises six buildings. Nusantara the main building boasts a distinctive Garuda-shaped roof. Nusantara I a 23-story behemoth houses offices and meeting rooms. Nusantara II III IV and V provide additional space for committees and conferences.

This isn’t just a place of political maneuvering. It has also served as a stage for monumental events. In May 1998 thousands of students occupied the building. They protested the Trisakti shootings and Suharto’s regime. It highlights the building’s role in Indonesia’s democratic evolution. Presidential inaugurations have also taken place here.

More than just a structure the Komplek MPR dan DPR RI is a living testament to Indonesia’s democratic journey. It’s a symbol of the country’s struggles and its aspirations for a better future. It’s a history written not just in stone but in the very air we breathe here today. The Garuda’s wings stand watch. They watch over the nation’s legislative heart. They are a powerful reminder of Indonesia’s past present and future.
