Ever wondered what secrets lie within the walls of Kolleg am Ring? This student residence is more than just a place to sleep. It is a hub of international exchange and self-governance.

Kolleg am Ring stands directly opposite the University Library. Its location makes it ideal for students at KIT. It is just a short walk from supermarkets, tram stops, sports facilities, and the city center.

The building houses 35 students on three floors. It hosts a diverse mix of residents. Nine rooms are reserved for the International Student Office. This ensures a vibrant international atmosphere. You will hear many languages spoken here. Besides German and English.

The large green garden surrounding Kolleg am Ring invites relaxation. It is perfect for summer barbecues with friends. Imagine students gathering here, sharing stories and laughter.

Inside, Kolleg am Ring operates on a self-governance model. Residents actively participate in decision-making. They contribute their ideas for projects and changes. The small number of residents fosters a strong sense of community.

Each floor has a shared kitchen and bathroom. The kitchens are equipped with refrigerators, freezers, and stoves. In the basement, you will find a bicycle storage room. There is also a laundry room, party cellar, and well-equipped gym. If you are hungry, there is even a pizza freezer.

Each room is 15 square meters. It includes a built-in wardrobe, shelf, bed, desk, chair, and sink. Internet access is provided. The rent is affordable at 269 Euros per month, including utilities. A deposit of 500 Euros is required.

The residents themselves manage Kolleg am Ring. Important decisions are made by the residents, not by a distant administrator. The Hausvollversammlung or HVV is the main body. It includes all residents and meets at least once a semester. The HVV elects house representatives. Each floor also elects a representative. This person manages the floor funds and addresses any issues.

Kolleg am Ring even handles its own room assignments. When a room becomes available, students can apply. The selection committee chooses new residents. It comprises house and floor representatives.

In 2003, the Studentenwohnheim des Karlsruher Instituts für Technologie (KIT) e.V. rented the former nurses’ residence. It was located on the former site of the children’s hospital. For a while, the building was called SchweWo. It officially opened on October 1, 2003. Today it is known as Kolleg am Ring. The building is now a protected monument. This is partly due to the mosaic on its facade.

Kolleg am Ring is more than just a dorm. It is a place where students from around the world come together. They live, learn, and grow. It is a place where community and self-governance thrive. A unique and special place in Karlsruhe.
