Perhaps no temple in Japan is quite like Kōsanji Temple. This unique temple is on Ikuchijima Island in Onomichi. Industrialist Kōzō Kanamoto founded Kōsanji Temple in 1936. He built it to honor his deceased mother.
Kōsanji Temple belongs to the Honganji Sect of the Jodo Shinshu School of Pure Land Buddhism. Kōzō Kōsanji was a pioneer in French-style welding. He resided in Osaka. He even entered the priesthood to honor his mother. It is written in a haiku: “The mothers of the world are as the Goddess of Mercy.”
The Kōsanji Temple complex took over 30 years to construct. Many structures model famous Japanese temples and shrines. The grounds cover about fifty thousand square meters.
Inside Kōsanji Temple, you will find the Kōsanji Museum. It houses over two thousand items. Nineteen are Important Cultural Properties. You can explore Buddhist art, tea utensils, modern art, and crafts. Pavilion No 3 Hohozo, Pavilion No 4 Sohozo, and Kongo Gallery display these collections.
One unmissable highlight is The Hill of Hope. Sculptor Kazuto Kuetani designed this monument. It features five thousand square meters of Carrara marble. The marble weighs about three thousand tons. Kuetani worked on it for 16 years. The garden opened in October 2000. Its theme is familial ties. It represents a peaceful world full of hope.
Also, don’t miss Choseikaku Villa. Kōzō Kōsanji built it in 1927. It was a private retreat for his mother. The villa combines Japanese and Western styles. It features elaborate details and advanced technology. Famous Japanese artists painted sliding door paintings and other artworks inside.
Kōsanji Temple also features a long cave. It is lined with statues and artifacts. They represent the Buddhist idea of hell. The interior stays cool even in summer. The eerie lighting might be spooky for children.
At the temple’s summit is Miraishin-no-Oka. This walking area provides a lookout point. Here, you can also find the Tower of Light statue. A small Italian eatery called Cafe Cuore is also available.
Kōsanji Temple is accessible by ferry or local bus. Ferries run from Onomichi Port to Sawa Port or Setoda Port on Ikuchijima Island. The ferry takes about 40 minutes. From either port, it is a 15-minute walk to the temple. A local bus from Onomichi Station to Setoda Port also stops in front of Kōsanji Temple.
