Have you ever tasted a Danish lunch so hearty it could fuel a blacksmith? Welcome to Kohalen in Aarhus. Right here on Jægergårdsgade you stand before a culinary landmark. For over a century Kohalen has served up traditional Danish fare. It’s more than just a restaurant. It’s a piece of Aarhus history.

Kohalen’s story begins in 1907. That’s when the city’s cattle market moved near the slaughterhouse. This restaurant was built right alongside it. It originally served the butchers cattle dealers and other workers. The name Kohalen itself is a nickname. It was originally called “Kvæg torvets Restauration”. A smaller room where drivers and workers ate their packed lunches was called Kohalen. That name stuck.

The restaurant has seen many changes. It was expanded in 1909 during a local exhibition. The owners have changed too. But the heart of Kohalen remains the same. Generations of Aarhus residents have enjoyed its simple but satisfying meals. Large portions have always been a hallmark. They are known for their enormous portions. Even the most hardworking man could be satisfied. Think a 400 gram Parisian beefsteak.

Rita and Jes Laustsen took over in 1998. They are dedicated to keeping the restaurant’s traditions alive. The staff still wear black and white uniforms. The atmosphere is cozy and welcoming. Some say it’s like stepping back in time. They strive to keep the menu filled with classics. Their roast pork is famous. Their beefsteak is legendary.

Despite a challenging period including a bankruptcy in 2022 Kohalen persevered. Thanks to loyal customers and generous support the restaurant reopened. Today it continues to thrive. It’s a reminder of Aarhus’ rich culinary heritage. Kohalen offers more than just a meal. It offers a taste of history. It offers a taste of Aarhus itself. Enjoy your lunch.
