Gazing up at the Kocatepe Camii, can you believe it took over two decades to build? This magnificent structure, the largest mosque in Ankara, dominates the skyline. You can see its towering minarets from almost anywhere in the city center. The Kocatepe Camii wasn’t always destined for such grandeur. The initial idea for a grand mosque in Ankara surfaced in the 1940s. A society dedicated to this very purpose formed in 1944, even calling for architectural designs in 1947. However, none met their vision. Years later, in 1956 under Prime Minister Adnan Menderes, land was finally allocated. A new competition commenced in 1957. A modern design by Vedat Dalokay and Nejat Tekelioglu won. Construction began on this innovative design. However, it faced harsh criticism for its contemporary style, so construction halted at the foundation level. The story takes a turn. Vedat Dalokay, undeterred, went on to win an international competition for the Shah Faisal Masjid in Islamabad in 1969. This victory likely contributed to his later involvement in a modified version of the Kocatepe Camii. Another competition in 1967 led to a more conservative design by Hüsrev Tayla and M. Fatin Uluengin. Construction finally resumed. The Kocatepe Camii, as you see it today, opened in 1987. This neo-classical Ottoman masterpiece draws inspiration from iconic mosques like the Selimiye Mosque in Edirne and the Şehzade and Sultan Ahmet Mosques in Istanbul. It can hold an astounding 24,000 worshippers. Inside, classical Ottoman décor abounds: marble, gold leaf, stained-glass windows, and decorative tiles create a breathtaking atmosphere. The Kocatepe Camii truly embodies the blend of tradition and modernity.
