Behold the Koblenzer Tor. A majestic gateway it stands. Part of the Electoral Residence Palace it connects Bonn to Koblenz.

Built between 1751 and 1757 this architectural gem was commissioned by Elector Clemens-August. It wasn’t just a pretty face. Oh no. The Koblenzer Tor served a much more important purpose. It was the meeting place and archive for the Order of the Knights of St Michael a powerful group. Imagine knights and secrets within these very walls.

The gate’s grandeur isn’t accidental. Those striking pairs of columns are intentional. The electoral coat of arms further enhances its representative character. Look closely. Above the columns you’ll find the personifications of the Order’s four virtues: piety perseverance fortitude and fidelity. The centerpiece though is the gilded lead casting of the Archangel Michael himself. A stunning sight isn’t it?

But here’s a little-known fact. The original figures including the Archangel Michael were destroyed during the war. The ones you see today are reproductions. The original Archangel Michael a gold-plated lead casting from 1755 resides safely inside the university building near lecture hall VIII. You’ll have to take a separate trip to see him.

The lateral gate passages once housed guard and customs rooms. Picture the bustling activity of those days. Merchants guards customs officials all passing through the Koblenzer Tor.

The Koblenzer Tor isn’t just a historical relic. It is a testament to the skill of its architect Michael Leveilly and the power of the Order of St Michael. It is also a symbol of Bonn’s rich history. A history that you are now a part of. Take a moment to appreciate the stunning architecture the symbolism and the stories held within these ancient walls. Let this magnificent gateway transport you through time.
