Atop the sleek bridge spanning the motorway a whisper of speed echoes. This is the København-Køge-Ringsted-banen. Its story isn’t just about trains. It’s about overcoming bottlenecks and political hurdles.

The København-Køge-Ringsted-banen a high-speed railway connects Copenhagen to Ringsted via Køge. It officially opened on June 1 2019. This new line was crucial. The old Vestbanen between Copenhagen and Ringsted was hopelessly congested. It was a major bottleneck in Denmark’s rail network.

The project began much earlier. In March 2007 the Danish parliament considered two solutions. One was to build new tracks. The other was to add a fifth track to the existing line. The more expensive new track solution was chosen in 2009. Construction began in September 2012.

A German-Swedish test train set a Danish speed record in 2018. It reached 255.6 km/h between Ringsted and Køge Nord. While daily trains don’t reach that speed the test proved the line’s high-speed capabilities.

The new line’s purpose was clear. It was designed to relieve congestion on the Vestbanen. This allowed for better regional train services. Travel time between Copenhagen Central Station and Køge was reduced by up to 15 minutes.

The København-Køge-Ringsted-banen boasts impressive capacity. It can handle 24 passenger trains per hour westbound. That’s far more than Copenhagen Central Station which can only manage 17. This expansion future-proofs the rail network for East Denmark’s growing traffic.

The line follows existing motorways to minimize environmental impact. It runs through Vigerslevparken in a tunnel. It continues alongside the Holbæk Motorway and the Køge Bugt Motorway. Køge Nord station was built. It connects to the Køge Bugt-banen and Lille Syd lines. From Køge the line follows the Vestmotorway to Ringsted.

The København-Køge-Ringsted-banen isn’t just about speed and efficiency. Køge Nord station is an architectural marvel. Its 225-meter pedestrian bridge connects the S-train and high-speed lines. This stunning bridge won awards. It’s a testament to Danish design and engineering.

The line’s construction wasn’t without its challenges. There were delays with the signalling system. The initial operating speed was limited. Full capacity and speed are only now being realized.

As you stand here on this bridge you feel the pulse of modern Denmark. This isn’t just a railway line. It’s a symbol of progress. It’s a story of ambition innovation and the persistent pursuit of a smoother more efficient journey. The København-Køge-Ringsted-banen a testament to Danish ingenuity.
