“Ever wondered where the name Koang Jaya comes from?” Let’s dive into the story of this unique place. Koang Jaya is a “kelurahan” or village in Karawaci. It is part of Tangerang City in Banten Province, Indonesia.
Once upon a time, Koang Jaya was just a small village. Locals called it Kampung Koang. The area was lush. Many plantations thrived here. There were coconut and coffee plants. But a special tree stood out: the Koang tree.
According to local elders, the Koang tree was abundant. It grew well in this area. The village was named after this tree. One of the most prominent Koang trees grew at the home of H. Saalan. He was a respected figure in the community. Today, At-Tasyri Mosque stands where his house once was.
Some people called the Koang tree the “Seribu Akar” or Thousand Roots tree. It grew tall. Its leaves provided ample shade. Its roots reached down to the earth. Sadly, the Koang tree is now rare. Climate change and development played a role in its disappearance. No records exist about the tree’s scientific name. Thus, the Koang tree’s true identity remains a mystery.
The name “Jaya” was added later. It was added when Koang became an official “kelurahan”. This happened under the Karawaci subdistrict. The hope was that Kampung Koang would always “berjaya” or be glorious.
In 1996, Pasar Baru “Kelurahan” was divided. This division created Koang Jaya. In 2000, further regulations formalized the division. This made Koang Jaya an independent “kelurahan”.
Today, Koang Jaya is bordered by several other “kelurahan”. To the north is Mekarsari. To the south is Pasar Baru. Neglasari is to the east. Pabuaran Tumpeng is to the west.
Koang Jaya covers about 0.16 square kilometers. In 2022, its population was 9,618. That is a density of 60,113 people per square kilometer.
Koang Jaya is known for its religious diversity. It has mosques, “musholla” or prayer rooms, a church, a Pura, and a Vihara. This makes Koang Jaya unique in Tangerang. It is the only “kelurahan” with complete houses of worship for five religions.
