Gazing across the turquoise waters, have you ever wondered about that small island just south of Promthep Cape? That, my friends, is Ko Kaeo Yai. It’s a mere kilometer away, a short hop by longtail boat from Rawai Pier. Ko Kaeo Yai isn’t your typical bustling Phuket tourist spot. It’s a peaceful islet, a haven of tranquility. Ko Kaeo Yai offers a unique experience. Its northeast-facing beach stretches 177 meters long and 18 meters wide, boasting some of the finest, deepest sand in Thailand. The island holds a special significance for Buddhists. A prominent Buddha statue, visible even from Phuket, stands serenely on the island, watching over the land. Close to the water’s edge, you’ll find a stone bearing a footprint believed to be the Buddha’s. Legend whispers that Ko Kaeo Yai was the Buddha’s first step on Phuket soil, before he continued to Rawai. The name Rawai is thought to derive from “Rao Wai,” meaning something akin to “we pay homage.” This historical and spiritual significance makes Ko Kaeo Yai a place of reverence. A Buddhist monastery resides on the island, adding to the serene atmosphere. Monks often retreat to Ko Kaeo Yai for short stays, drawn by its spiritual importance. Beyond its spiritual side, Ko Kaeo Yai offers simple pleasures. Snorkeling is superb thanks to the exceptionally clear water and vibrant coral. You can enjoy a peaceful picnic on the beach. Just remember to leave no trace behind. A walk to the large Buddha statue and the Buddha’s footprint offers a taste of Thai culture. For the adventurous, try hiking around the island’s circumference. Start on the northwest end of the beach and proceed counterclockwise. Be warned though, the terrain can be challenging. Less than 300 feet west along the coast, you’ll encounter a large Buddha shrine near the water, easily accessible from the beach. Ko Kaeo Yai is a true hidden gem of Phuket. It blends natural beauty with spiritual significance, offering a unique and memorable experience. It’s a place to escape the crowds, connect with nature, and perhaps even find a moment of quiet meditation.
