Was Wat Phra Nang Sang always this serene? This temple, the oldest in Phuket, has seen it all. Founded over 200 years ago, when Thalang was Phuket’s heart, Wat Prha Nang Sang whispers tales of love, betrayal, and war. It even witnessed the Burmese invasion of 1785. Legend says Lady Luad Khao, wife of Nakhon Si Thammarat’s ruler, built this sanctuary. Accused of infidelity, she wished to honor Lord Buddha’s relics in Sri Lanka before her execution, a final plea granted. She built Wat Prha Nang Sang upon her return. Her execution revealed white blood, a testament to her purity, forever known as Phra Nang Luad Khao, “the lady with white blood.” Wat Prha Nang Sang’s allure lies in its three ancient Buddha statues – Phra Nai Phung “abdomen Buddha” and Phra Sam Kasat “Three King Buddha.” Nestled within another Buddha statue, they’re a sight to behold. While a recent renovation has brought a sense of peace, whispers of the temple’s former eccentric decorations remain. Envision, if you will, giant warriors clutching automatic weapons guarding the very heart of the temple. A stark contrast to the tranquility that washes over you now. Wat Prha Nang Sang stands as a testament to Phuket’s rich history – a blend of serenity and intrigue. Take a moment to appreciate the stillness, the whispers of the past, and the enduring legacy of Lady Luad Khao.
