How did a hospital become one of Europe’s largest? It happened right here at the Klinikum der Universität München. This is more than just a hospital. It is a sprawling complex with a rich history tied to Munich’s academic heart.

The Klinikum der Universität München wasn’t always one entity. It began as two separate campuses. There was Campus Innenstadt in the city center and Campus Großhadern in the Hadern district. In 1999, they merged to form the LMU Klinikum. It was known as Klinikum der Universität München until 2020.

Let’s step back in time. The Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich established its medical faculty in 1472. The university moved to Munich in 1825. The medical faculty used the Anatomy building for non-clinical studies. They also used the General Hospital for clinical studies. This hospital is now the Medical Clinic on Ziemssenstraße.

Over time, more clinics and institutes appeared. These included the Dr. von Hauner Children’s Hospital and the Surgical Clinic. Each field of medicine had its own building. This created a unique “clinic quarter”. In 1991, these clinics merged to become the Klinikum Innenstadt.

Meanwhile, a new concept emerged. It was the idea to bring all clinics together under one roof. The location chosen was a large site in Großhadern. Construction began in 1967 and lasted until 1977. The main building became a landmark. Students nicknamed it “the Toaster” because of its shape.

Today, the Klinikum der Universität München is a leader in patient care, research, and education. It has over 2,000 beds and 48 clinics. It is one of the largest hospitals in Europe. The organ transplantation department is a leader in Germany. They perform heart, lung, pancreas, and kidney transplants.

The Klinikum also plays a vital role in medical research. Attached to the clinic is a school of nursing. The clinic has a base for the “Christoph München” rescue helicopter.

The Klinikum der Universität München continues to evolve. It embraces progress while honoring its past. It stands as a beacon of hope for patients. It also fosters learning for future generations of doctors and nurses. It’s a place where medical innovation meets compassionate care. The Klinikum remains at the forefront of German medicine.
