Stepping inside the Klinikkirche, one can almost feel the echoes of prayers whispered over centuries. This unique sanctuary, nestled in the heart of Munich, holds a fascinating story that intertwines two Christian denominations. The Klinikkirche isn’t just one church, but two interwoven faiths sharing a single space. Originally, the Klinikkirche served as the abbey church of St. Anna im Lehel, the first Rococo church in Old Bavaria. Its construction began in 1727, a joyous tribute to the birth of Maximilian III Joseph, heir to the Bavarian crown. Architect Johann Michael Fischer masterfully blended longitudinal and central architectural styles, a groundbreaking innovation for the time. The opulent interior, a masterpiece of Rococo artistry, is the work of Cosmas Damian Asam, Egid Quirin Asam, and Johann Baptist Straub. Their frescoes and stuccowork transformed the church into a visual feast, reflecting the grandeur of the Bavarian court. The Klinikkirche’s journey took an unexpected turn during World War II. Bombing raids in April 1944 severely damaged the structure, including the 19th-century neo-romanesque additions. The subsequent reconstruction stripped away these later additions, revealing Fischer’s original façade which was moved forward. Today, Klinikkirche represents a unique blend of history and faith, a testament to its resilience and its enduring spiritual significance in the heart of Munich. It stands as a beacon of hope, a shared sacred space for both Catholic and Lutheran congregations.
