Imagine a city’s lifeline. It’s not a grand boulevard, but a place like the Kläranlage Dresden-Kaditz. This is Dresden’s main wastewater treatment plant. The Kläranlage Dresden-Kaditz stands as a testament to Dresden’s commitment to public health and environmental stewardship.

Operated by Stadtentwässerung Dresden GmbH the Kläranlage Dresden-Kaditz processes an average of 153000 cubic meters of wastewater per day. Its reach extends far beyond Dresden’s city limits. Neighboring communities like Freital and Pirna contribute to its daily intake. Around 650000 people depend on the Kläranlage Dresden-Kaditz.

The associated sewer system stretches about 1800 km. Two-thirds of the drained urban area use a combined sewer system. One-third operates with a separate system.

Let’s step back in time. Dresden’s initial wastewater disposal involved channels emptying directly into the Elbe. As the city grew, this system proved inadequate. Cholera epidemics highlighted the urgent need for modern sanitation. Thus, the concept of a central wastewater treatment plant was born.

Construction of the mechanical cleaning plant on Kaditz meadows began in 1909. Hermann Klette oversaw technology. Hans Erlwein managed architecture. This early plant used rotating sieve disks to remove solids.

In 1936 a closed digestion tank was built to treat sludge. This was a forward-thinking move for its time. After World War II, focus shifted to agricultural wastewater usage. The aim was to use wastewater nutrients to boost crop yields.

By 1987, the Kläranlage Dresden-Kaditz was in terrible condition. A power failure during a flood caused a total breakdown. Fortunately, this crisis spurred action. The plant underwent major upgrades and expansions.

Today the Kläranlage Dresden-Kaditz uses advanced processes. These include anaerobic sludge stabilization and nitrogen removal. After treatment, the cleaned water returns to the Elbe.

The city plans to invest millions in the Kläranlage Dresden-Kaditz. These investments will support upgrades to handle population growth and industrial demands. A fourth cleaning stage is also planned.

By 2025, a second gas storage tank should be constructed. This addition ensures enough gas for the combined heat and power plants. These plants already generate most of the power for the Kläranlage Dresden-Kaditz.

Did you know the Kläranlage Dresden-Kaditz is more than just a treatment facility? It also serves as a habitat for protected plants and animals. It integrates art installations. The Kläranlage Dresden-Kaditz even has a wild bird rescue center.

The Kläranlage Dresden-Kaditz plays a vital role in Dresden’s infrastructure. It is a symbol of sustainability. Its evolution reflects Dresden’s commitment to innovation and environmental protection. Next time you turn on the tap, remember the Kläranlage Dresden-Kaditz.
