Beneath the stone lies a history whispered through centuries. This is the Kisikli Abdullahaga Camii a testament to faith and resilience in the heart of Uskudar.

Kisikli Abdullahaga Camii stands proudly. It was commissioned by Bostancibasi Abdullah Aga a prominent figure during the reign of Sultan Bayezid II. The exact construction date remains a mystery shrouded in time. However documents suggest its completion sometime around 1489 or perhaps earlier. Abdullah Aga’s death is recorded as 1489. His vakfiye a charitable endowment document dates to 1502. These dates offer clues about the mosque’s age. Some conflicting accounts place his death in 1591. This further complicates the timeline. However his tomb within the Kisikli Abdullahaga Camii bears the inscription “Year 895 Hijri” pointing towards a pre-1489 construction.

The Kisikli Abdullahaga Camii has endured the passage of time. It withstood the devastating earthquake of 1892. Subsequent renovations took place in 1927 and 2016 ensuring its preservation for future generations. The mosque’s single minaret and two balconies are striking features. Its walls are constructed of brick a sturdy testament to its enduring architecture. The roof is beautifully crafted from wood. The mosque’s courtyard boasts a recently restored ablution fountain a tranquil spot for reflection. A notable column base within the courtyard further adds to the architectural appeal of Kisikli Abdullahaga Camii.

The main entrance displays an inscription a verse from the Quran and the date 1346 (1927). This marks a significant restoration. Light streams through its upper and lower windows creating a serene atmosphere inside. The mihrab the prayer niche is delicately designed. The minbar the pulpit is crafted from wood.

Abdullah Aga was a Bostancibasi a member of a unique corps. They were responsible for the Sultan’s gardens and orchards. They also acted as a kind of elite police force. This explains why Abdullah Aga’s associated cesme or fountain was called Cellat Cesmesi which translates to Executioner’s Fountain. His significant endowment encompassed a vast area. It stretched from the Kuzguncuk slopes to the foothills of Kisikli. This demonstrates his wealth and piety. The vakfiye details his substantial charitable contributions. His son Sinan administered the wakf after his father’s death twelve years later. His tomb is a fine example of 15th-century stone carving a testament to his status and the artistry of the time. The mosque remains a vibrant place of worship and a living reminder of its historical significance. The Kisikli Abdullahaga Camii continues to serve as a place of prayer and meditation. It also serves as a window into Istanbul’s rich and layered past.
