The church stands as a testament to its founders’ vision and unwavering commitment. Kirkwood Temple CME Church began humbly in 1924. Mr. and Mrs. F.W. Kirkwood opened their home to a small group of believers. These five charter members laid the foundation for what would become a vibrant spiritual community. Today, Kirkwood Temple CME Church thrives at 1440 Sunny Glen Drive in Dallas. It has seen remarkable growth and transformation over the years. Its story is woven into the fabric of Oak Cliff. The church has worshipped in five different locations throughout its history. Each move symbolized growth and adaptation to the changing needs of its congregation. From its humble beginnings in a private home to its current edifice on Sunny Glen Drive, Kirkwood Temple CME Church has continuously expanded its reach. The church’s leadership has played a crucial role in its success. Thirty pastors have guided the congregation over the past century. Dr. Jerry L. Christian Sr. holds the distinction of being the longest-serving pastor. His 30-year tenure, beginning in 1994, has been a period of significant growth and outreach. The church is known for its welcoming atmosphere, outstanding music ministry, and diverse ministries. Kirkwood Temple CME Church is more than just a place of worship. It is a beacon of hope and support for the community, offering over 25 ministries. These ministries address a wide range of needs. They include grief recovery, domestic violence support, and assistance for seniors and those living alone. The church’s centennial anniversary theme reflects its enduring strength. “A Century of Continuous Faith and Ministry Built on a Solid Foundation” draws inspiration from Luke 6:48.
