Kirkland. A name whispered on the winds of fortune, a name etched in steel and wool. Imagine a man, Peter Kirk, standing on the shores of Lake Washington in 1886. He envisions a steel empire, a “Pittsburgh of the West.” Kirkland was to be the heart of this empire. He had auctioned off his English estate, traded the familiar comforts of home for the promise of the American dream. He saw in this land, east of Seattle, the perfect location for his Moss Bay Iron and Steel Works. The year is 1892. The steel mill stands tall, a testament to Kirk’s ambition. But fate, it seemed, had other plans. The Panic of 1893 swept the nation, leaving financial ruin in its wake. Kirkland’s steel mill, the cornerstone of Kirk’s dream, closed without ever producing a single ounce of steel. Kirk, defeated but not broken, retreated to the San Juan Islands. His dream of steel may have vanished, but the town that bore his name persevered. Kirkland refused to surrender to the economic hardship. The fledgling city found new life in the hum of wool mills and the clang of shipyards. In 1892, the first wool mill in Washington state opened in Kirkland, outfitting prospectors during the Alaska Gold Rush and later supplying the U.S. Military during World War I. The shores of Lake Washington, once envisioned as a hub for steel production, became home to a bustling shipbuilding industry. Ferries were constructed, connecting Kirkland to the growing metropolis of Seattle. By 1940, Kirkland’s Lake Washington Shipyard was churning out warships for the U.S. Navy, contributing to the war effort. Over 25 warships were built during World War II at what is now Carillon Point, a site now occupied by a luxury hotel and innovative tech companies. Kirkland, the first city on the Eastside, officially incorporated in 1905. For years, it served as the transportation hub of the Eastside. Ferries plied the waters between Kirkland’s city dock at Marina Park and Seattle, operating 18 hours a day. This vital link ended in 1940 with the opening of the Lake Washington Floating Bridge. Today, Kirkland stands as a thriving community of over 80,000, boasting the region’s only downtown waterfront. It’s a city that has weathered economic storms, adapted to changing times, and emerged as a vibrant hub of innovation and culture. Kirkland, a testament to the resilience of the human spirit, a city forged not in steel, but in the enduring pursuit of dreams.
