Who would have thought a cemetery could hold so much history? Kirchweyher Friedhof, right here in Kirchweyhe, is more than just a resting place. It’s a living testament to the past. Kirchweyher Friedhof is the burial ground for those from Kirchweyhe, Sudweyhe, Dreye, Jeebel, and Lahausen. This cemetery, roughly 265 meters long and 255 meters wide, sits on the northeastern edge of Kirchweyhe. You’ll find it near Kirchweyher Straße 4e, just southwest of the Felicianuskirche. The current Kirchweyher Friedhof wasn’t always here. Before 1865, the community used a smaller, church-centered burial ground around the Felicianuskirche. The present chapel on the grounds dates back to 1969. It replaced an older structure from the 1920s. Take a walk just 20 meters to the right of the entrance. You’ll discover a poignant reminder of a darker time. A memorial marks the graves of 26 individuals who perished during World War II and under Nazi rule. Among them lie 19 young German soldiers. Three civilians who fell during the battles for Kirchweyhe and Sudweyhe in April 1945 are also buried there. Four forced laborers rest alongside them. A plaque nearby commemorates four other forced laborers whose graves are no longer marked. Kirchweyher Friedhof is a place of quiet reflection. It offers a glimpse into the lives and losses of those who came before.
