Standing tall amidst the peaceful Balzers cemetery, Kirchturm St. Nikolaus, the tower of the old St. Nikolaus parish church, tells a story through the ages. The tower is all that’s left of the original church, which served the community for centuries. But this majestic stone structure, built in 1805, stands witness to a vibrant history. This tower was once part of the second St. Nikolaus church, which replaced the first one destroyed in 1795 by a devastating fire that swept through Balzers, destroying 34 homes and the parish house. The original church, built long before 1795, had been a symbol of faith for the villagers. Its origins can be traced back to 842 or 843, mentioned in a document as one of two churches in the village of Balzers. Although the first church’s patron saint remains unknown, the second church, built after the devastating fire, was dedicated to Saint Nicholas. Even after the second church was demolished in 1925, the tower, a monument of the community’s faith, stood strong.
