Here in Wahnhausen stands a testament to faith. It is a building that has watched over this village for centuries. This is the Kirche Wahnhausen.

Let’s journey back to the Middle Ages. Wahnhausen was a village connected to its surroundings by the Fulda River. Imagine life here around 1107 when Wahnhausen was first mentioned. The river provided fish and a means of transport. Villagers were even known as “Abutzen” like the fish they caught.

In 1107, a nobleman named Kunimund donated his property in Wahnhausen to Hersfeld Monastery. This act highlights the early significance of this place.

Now, consider the village in 1247. The Duke of Braunschweig seized Wahnhausen. Yet the land still belonged to the Landgrave of Hessen-Kassel. This peculiar situation lasted for 584 years.

Interestingly, Wahnhausen didn’t have a road connecting it to other towns. The Fulda River was its lifeline. Villagers worked as ship pullers. They towed boats from Münden to Kassel.

Time passed and Wahnhausen transformed. In 1831, the village with its 267 residents, returned to the rule of Kurhessen. It shifted from a farming and fishing village. It became home to workers from nearby Kassel.

The Kirche Wahnhausen was built in the 16th century. Then, in 1778, it was expanded westward. This expansion shows a growing community and its evolving needs.

Before the church was built, the area was already significant. Historical records from 1723 mention “Die alte Kirche” and “Bey der Alten Kirchen” near Eichberg. This suggests an older settlement or perhaps a predecessor to the current Kirche Wahnhausen.

From 1515 to 1521, there was a parish in Wahnhausen. For some time Wahnhausen was associated with Speele. Later, both became part of Lutterberg. In 1738, Speele became the main church again. Wahnhausen became a filial. This arrangement lasted until 1962. Then Wahnhausen was assigned to the Rothwesten parish.

The people of Wahnhausen embraced the Reformation. This likely happened in the mid-16th century.

Today, the Kirche Wahnhausen stands as a proud landmark. The Kirche Wahnhausen serves the Rothwesten-Wahnhausen parish. The Kirche Wahnhausen is located on Kirchweg. Its coordinates are 51.365 N, 9.568 O. The Kirche Wahnhausen is a testament to Wahnhausen’s enduring spirit. The Kirche Wahnhausen has witnessed centuries of change and faith. It continues to be a focal point for the community.
