Did the year 1107 mean anything to you before today? Probably not. But for the Kirche Frommershausen, nestled here in Vellmar, just a short hop from Kassel, it was a pivotal year. This was the year the nobleman Kunimund gifted the village of Frumehereshusun, the precursor to Frommershausen, to Hersfeld Abbey. Imagine the scene. Perhaps a grand ceremony right here where the Kirche Frommershausen now stands. Kirche Frommershausen wasn’t always the name of this lovely building. Over the years, its name morphed and shifted, much like the village itself. From Drumershusen in 1196 to Fromershusen around 1200, and later Vrumershusen in 1296, the name evolved, reflecting the changing times. The heart of Frommershausen, the Kirche Frommershausen, also bears witness to centuries of history. The very stones of this church whisper tales from the 12th century. That’s when the original structure took root, a testament to the enduring power of faith. Inside, the music that once filled the air still resonates. Though we can’t hear the original melodies, we know they were played on a magnificent organ. This isn’t just any organ, mind you. This is a Johann Stephan Heeren organ, installed in 1769. Picture the skilled hands of the organist, bringing the instrument to life, filling the Kirche Frommershausen with joyous hymns. The Kirche Frommershausen has been more than just a place of worship. It’s been a gathering place, a symbol of community, a silent observer of generations coming and going, marking births, marriages, and deaths. The Kirche Frommershausen continues to serve its community.
