A thousand years of history whisper from these stones. Welcome to Kirchditmold a Kassel district brimming with stories. Kirchditmold first appeared in records in 1019. Its origins however stretch back further possibly to the time of Saint Bonifatius. Legend speaks of Saint Heimerad preaching here in Ditmelle in the early eleventh century. The original Martinskirche stood on a hilltop. It replaced an even older pagan place of worship. This early church became important as the seat of an archpriest.

By the late eleventh century the overlordship of Kirchditmold passed to the Counts of Schauenburg. They gained their title from this very place. When Heinrich Raspe IV the last Landgrave of Thuringia died in 1247 a power struggle erupted. Archbishop Siegfried III of Mainz claimed Kirchditmold and Kassel. He based his claim on ancient rights. This sparked the Thuringian-Hessian War of Succession. On March 26 1247 he invested Hermann and Heinrich von Wolfershausen with the overlordship of Ditmold.

Kirchditmold suffered during the Siege of Kassel in 1385. Balthasar of Thuringia plundered the village. Between 1524 and 1534 under the leadership of Pastor Hektor Walter its people converted to Protestantism. The Seven Years’ War saw Kirchditmold become a focal point of conflict. Many battles and troop movements took place. Pastor Johann Christoph Cuntz meticulously documented these events. His detailed records are a treasure trove of historical information.

The tower of the old church collapsed on April 26 1780. The present church was built between 1787 and 1792 on the same spot. On April 1 1906 Kirchditmold was incorporated into Kassel. The Oberförsterei Kirchditmold district joined in 1928. The name itself has evolved over the centuries from Diethmelle to its current form. The older names without “Kirch” undoubtedly refer to Kirchditmold. Rothenditmold was always distinguished by additional names.

Kirchditmold’s history is not just about battles and rulers. It’s a tale of everyday lives. It is a story of faith resilience and adaptation. The Riedwiesensiedlung housing estate built between 1925 and 1933 stands as a testament to its architectural heritage. This unique community has evolved over time. Yet the charm of its historic core remains. It is a beautiful blend of old and new where history and modernity intertwine. Explore its streets its church its homes.
