Thankfully, nobody was hurt. The Kings Bridge, named after the street it carries, isn’t just any bridge. It’s a vital artery of Melbourne. It connects the bustling city centre to the south bank, even carrying the weight of the Crown Casino on its shoulders, or at least its viaduct. The 1962 collapse was a major embarrassment. Imagine the inquiries, the finger-pointing! The Royal Commission that followed uncovered a series of oversights. Turns out, high tensile steel was used – a good idea in theory, but its welding requires special care. The fabricators, perhaps a little too eager to finish the job, didn’t quite meet those requirements. The collapse of Kings Bridge serves as a potent reminder: even the most impressive structures can falter when we cut corners. Thankfully, it was rebuilt stronger and smarter.
