Thirty-seven believers gathered in a home. They sought divine guidance. A new church was born. This is the story of Kingdom of Christ Baptist Church in Chicago. It all began in 1972. Pastor James A Horton led the way.
Kingdom of Christ Baptist Church wasn’t always on 301 N Central Avenue. Initially services were held in Horton’s home. But the congregation grew. They needed a permanent space. They found it in a surprising place. The former 15th Church of Christ Scientist building became their new home. The first service was held there in 1973.
This beautiful building has a rich history. It’s an architectural gem. It’s a blend of styles. Neoclassical and art deco elements are evident. Architect Nelson Max Dunning designed it. Construction spanned from 1926 to 1943. The building’s exterior has been remarkably well-preserved. Only minor alterations have been made. This means the building’s original design largely remains intact.
Kingdom of Christ Baptist Church isn’t just a building. It’s a testament to faith and community. It’s a vibrant hub. Pastor Horton served faithfully until his death in 1995. Other pastors followed. Each one contributed to the church’s growth and mission. Today Pastor Marcus Clemons leads the congregation.
The church actively serves the community. A food pantry provides vital support. Foreign mission work extends to Haiti and Africa. Financial aid is sent regularly.
