Did you know the King County Administration Building was once almost empty? This imposing nine-story structure at 500 Fourth Avenue stands before us. It’s a significant landmark in Seattle’s downtown core. Completed in 1971 the King County Administration Building is known for its unique hexagonal design. The honeycomb pattern on its walls and windows is instantly recognizable.

The King County Administration Building housed many important county agencies. The Assessor’s Office the Recorder’s Office and the Vehicle Licensing department were all located here. So were Archives and Records Management Facilities Management and Marriage Licensing. Even parts of the King County Sheriff’s Office and the Prosecuting Attorney’s office had space here.

But the building’s story isn’t just about its impressive size or the agencies within. The plaza surrounding the King County Administration Building was the site of a notable event. In 2016 homeless individuals staged a five-month protest. They were protesting against funding cuts for a local homeless non-profit. This highlights the building’s place not only in the administrative landscape of King County but also in its social history.

The King County Administration Building was largely vacant by 2020. The COVID-19 pandemic prompted the county to adopt a remote work policy. With rising maintenance costs and the need for significant renovations the county made a momentous decision. In 2022 it announced the complete closure of the King County Administration Building. There are no immediate plans for its future.

In 2023 a fascinating proposal surfaced. County Executive Dow Constantine suggested the building’s demolition. This is part of a broader redevelopment plan for the civic campus. This building.
