On a crisp January day in 2025, the halls of Kimya Metalurji Fakültesi buzzed with anticipation. A renowned visitor, Prof. Dr. Antonio Torres from Tecnologico de Monterrey-Mexico, was about to deliver a seminar. Kimya Metalurji Fakültesi, the Faculty of Chemistry and Metallurgy at Istanbul Technical University, has a rich history. It represents a fusion of two distinct disciplines. The journey began in 1958 with the establishment of a 4-year chemical engineering program. This marked the foundation of what would later evolve into the esteemed Kimya Metalurji Fakültesi. The first chemical engineering graduates emerged in 1962. Shortly after, in 1963, the Faculty of Chemistry was officially established. It was the sixth faculty of Istanbul Technical University. Metallurgy took its own path, with the first Metallurgy Department in Turkey established within the Faculty of Mining in 1961. This department eventually became the first Faculty of Metallurgy in 1977. These two distinct academic paths converged in 1982, giving birth to the Kimya Metalurji Fakültesi as we know it today. The faculty continued to grow, adding a Food Engineering Department in 1990. The Metallurgy Engineering Department evolved. It was renamed “Metallurgy and Materials Engineering” in 1998. In 2006, an International Joint Undergraduate Program in Bioengineering was introduced, further diversifying the faculty’s offerings. Prof. Torres’s seminar, titled “Background for an invitation to participate in collaborative research: Novel tools reducing waste, risks & quality losses of refrigerated foods,” was held in classroom D202. This event highlights Kimya Metalurji Fakültesi’s commitment to international collaboration and cutting-edge research. It builds upon the faculty’s long-standing tradition of innovation and academic excellence.
