Here we stand before the Kimberley Atlético Club a Buenos Aires institution. Founded in 1906 as Kimberley Athletic Club this club has a rich history spanning over a century. It began with a small group of young enthusiasts led by José Chiesa R Viviani and the Pianaroli brothers. Interestingly the Pianaroli brothers were founding members of Club Atlético Platense before internal conflicts led them to establish their own club. The name Kimberley is believed to be inspired by the South African city of the same name. This is because a South African team toured Argentina in the same year.

Kimberley initially played football competing in lower divisions until 1911. Their first field was near the Estadio Monumental. In 1912 the club joined a breakaway league the Federacion Argentina de Football. They even played some home games at the GEBA Stadium before having their own field in Villa Urquiza. Kimberley played in the top division of Argentine football until 1915 experiencing success against major clubs of the time. They competed in national cups as well notably reaching the semifinals of the Copa de Competencia La Nación in 1914.

However 1915 brought relegation. The following year Kimberley disaffiliated from the AFA. In 1939 the club relocated to Villa Devoto. It wasn’t until the 1970s that Kimberley started focusing on its youth football section. In 2006 the club rejoined AFA this time focusing on futsal. Their futsal team’s rise has been remarkable. They quickly gained promotion to Primera División.

Their success in futsal is undeniable. Kimberley Atlético Club achieved Primera División titles in 2015 and 2016 winning the Supercopa Argentina de Futsal in 2016. This victory qualified them for the Copa Libertadores. The club also competed in the Copa Argentina de Futsal reaching the final in 2018. Though they lost to San Lorenzo their presence in these major tournaments highlights their impact on Argentine futsal.

The Kimberley Atlético Club’s journey is a testament to resilience and passion. From humble beginnings to futsal glory its story reflects the spirit of Buenos Aires. It shows how a club can adapt and thrive changing with the times while retaining its core values. The club’s long history and recent triumphs make it a fascinating and important part of Buenos Aires’ sporting legacy. Now isn’t that a remarkable story?
