The soaring spire of Kildevældskirken pierces the Copenhagen sky. Its Neo-Gothic silhouette a stark contrast to the surrounding modern architecture. This isn’t just any church. Kildevældskirken holds a unique place in Copenhagen’s history.

Kildevældskirken’s story begins in the 1920s. Zion’s Parish was booming. It was the second largest in Copenhagen. A new church was needed. The Copenhagen Church Foundation stepped in. They raised the funds to build this magnificent structure.

A design competition followed. Paul Staffeldt Matthiesen won. His vision for Kildevældskirken was bold. He infused it with a Neo-Gothic style. This style was a deliberate choice. It was a nostalgic nod to medieval Danish abbey churches and the village churches of Zealand. This was a fascinating contrast to the Modernist trends dominating Danish architecture at the time.

The foundation stone was laid on January 29 1930. Kildevældskirken was consecrated on October 2 1932. The church’s interior is breathtaking. It’s whitewashed and boasts a stunning cross-vaulted ceiling. The crypt is a special feature. It has a separate entrance. The parish uses it for social gatherings.

Look closely at the altarpiece. Oscar Matthiesen painted it. He was the architect’s father. He also painted the Constituent Assembly in Christiansborg’s assembly hall. The altarpiece depicts Jesus with a Samaritan Woman. The pulpit is carved wood. It shows three scenes from the Acts of the Apostles. Next to it hangs a copy of Jens Adolf Jerichau’s crucifix. This crucifix is also in St Paul’s Church at Nyboder and outside Jesus Church in Valby. The original is in the Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek.

Kildevældskirken is more than just a building. It’s a testament to a time of architectural contrast. It’s a vibrant part of the Østerbro community. Its history echoes in its every detail. Its beauty endures. Step inside Kildevældskirken. Feel its history. Let its story touch your soul. The legacy of Kildevældskirken continues to inspire and uplift.
