Imagine, fields stretching as far as the eye can see. This is Kildebrønde. It is an ancient village whose origins vanish into the mists of time. It predates the Viking Age.

Welcome to Kildebrønde. Let me share its story. In 1335, it was called Geldebrun. By 1376, the Roskildebispens Jordebog referred to it as Geldebrænne. The name Kildebrønde appeared first in Christian V’s registry of 1688.

The name itself is interesting. “Kilde” in old East Danish meant “brønd” or well. This makes the name a double word. But the original “brun” may not mean brand. It may refer to an old cultivation method. Farmers would burn off a piece of land. This would clear old grass, bushes, and plants. Then they would sow the first seeds in the ashes.

As far back as history records, Kildebrønde has been a strong agricultural area. In 1801, the first real census counted 378 residents. By 1880, this had grown to 811. In 1923, the village had 1036 inhabitants. The population continued to rise to around 2000 in 1960. After that, the number increased sharply. This was mainly in the beach area because of large subdivisions. Today, almost 18,000 people live in Kildebrønde parish.

Kildebrønde Church is believed to be one of the oldest in the area. It was built in the 1100s from ashlars and chalk. Later additions and restorations in the late 1500s added brick. This is when the church got its tower. The church sits on a small hill. This elevated spot likely holds ancient remains under the current buildings. New construction and excavation projects require caution. Workers must be aware of what the soil layers might contain. Like the church, the houses and farms in Kildebrønde have been maintained. In the old days, it was called “Kildebrønde Kirkeby.”

One of the most notable buildings is Kildebrønde Old School. It stands directly opposite the church. The school was built in 1860. The then-pastor of Greve and Kildebrønde Parish, Pastor van Wylich, initiated it. He served the two parishes from 1847 to 1877. Van Wylich was also Henrik Scharling’s model for Pastor Blicher. This was in Nødebo rectory.

Kildebrønde School had students until 1954. That year, the municipality opened the new central school. Today it is called Hedelyskolen. From 1954 to 1981, the municipality used Kildebrønde School as rehousing accommodation.

In 1981, the Kildebrønde Parish Council bought the school. They wanted to convert it into a parish hall. In the years that followed, the buildings underwent extensive restoration. Meeting rooms, offices, a choir room, and a kitchen were installed. The parish hall hosts meetings of various kinds. It is also available for gatherings after funerals.

Besides its rich history, Kildebrønde is also known for its location. It sits near the Køge Bugt Motorway. The old highway between Køge and Taastrup runs through it. This road was the main connection between Copenhagen and Køge until 1935. Kildebrønde’s businesses are located here. Small side streets evoke the past.

Today, Kildebrønde offers a blend of old and new. Kildebrønde Care resides in the restored inn. Kildebrønde Frugtplantage allows visitors to pick their own fruit. The cleaning company Combi Service has its headquarters here.

Kildebrønde is more than just a village. It is a living testament to Denmark’s past. It is a community that cherishes its history while embracing the future.
