Was it a mirage shimmering in the midday Kigali sun? No, the Kigali City Tower. It stood tall, a gleaming testament to Rwanda’s progress. Kigali City Tower is a symbol of the country’s economic resurgence. It is a beacon of modernity in the heart of Kigali. The Kigali City Tower project began in 2006. Rwandan businessman Hatari Sekoko spearheaded the project through his company, Doyelcy Limited. Sekoko, a veteran of the Rwandan Civil War, had previously worked in Japan to raise capital. He then returned to Rwanda, starting a coffee distribution business and diversifying into real estate and hospitality. The tower’s construction, entrusted to the Chinese company China Civil Engineering Construction, marked a significant step in Kigali’s urban development. Initially envisioned as a circular structure with a spiral design, primarily serving as a viewing platform, the tower’s design evolved. By 2008, Sekoko’s team had opted for an elliptical shape to maximize floor space. The tower officially opened in 2011, its twenty stories rising above the Kigali skyline. The complex also includes a four-story commercial center and a four-story car park. Kigali City Tower is located on Avenue du Commerce, formerly the site of Kigali’s central bus station. This bustling hub of activity now hosts a variety of businesses and entertainment venues. Inside, you’ll find a mix of leased office spaces and retail outlets. Bourbon Coffee, a local favorite, offers a taste of Rwandan coffee culture. The Century Cinema complex, with its four screens, provides entertainment for moviegoers. One screen is even equipped with 4D technology, a first in East Africa. From a former bus station to a gleaming symbol of progress, Kigali City Tower embodies Rwanda’s resilience and forward-looking spirit. The Kigali City Tower stands as a testament to Rwanda’s growth.
