Beneath our feet lies a story etched in sand and water: the tale of Kiesgrube Leuben-Nord. This is not just any lake. It is a testament to Dresden’s past and present. Kiesgrube Leuben-Nord as it is known today began as a simple gravel pit.
The Kiesgrube Leuben divided over time. It split into two unique lakes. There is Kiesgrube Leuben-Süd and Kiesgrube Leuben-Nord. Kiesgrube Leuben-Nord offers peace and relaxation now. It has a depth of about 15 meters. Wild bathing is not allowed here. It is reserved for diving and fishing.
But how did this transformation happen? Picture the relentless work of excavators. They tirelessly extracted gravel from the earth. This formed a deep void. Over time groundwater and rainwater filled the depression. Kiesgrube Leuben-Nord emerged.
Interestingly this area is closely connected to the post-war history of Dresden. The Kiesgrube Leuben-Nord is also called Knoblochkiesgrube. This name comes from the old property. Under a massive hill close to the Kiesgrube Leuben lies rubble from the air raids on Dresden in 1945. Locals call it Dresdner Berg Klamott.
Today Kiesgrube Leuben-Nord is a haven for divers. A diving base offers an artificial underwater world. It promises an unforgettable adventure. You can find all information about diving on the website of Tauchcenter Dresden.
Beyond diving Kiesgrube Leuben-Nord offers a tranquil escape. Sunbathing and swimming are tolerated here. This is despite the absence of an official bathing permit. With or without swimwear people can relax here. The Kiesgrube Leuben is a unique place. It combines nature, adventure and relaxation.
The north pond of Kiesgrube Leuben is home to many nutria. These animals are very trusting. They swim towards the shore when people stand there. Passers-by reported that the nutria even swim with the bathers in summer. The nutria, also known as swamp beaver or biberratte, comes from South America. It was imported to Europe for the fur industry.
