A monumental fountain greets you at the entrance of the Khedive’s Palace. This magnificent structure is more than just a building. It’s a window into a pivotal era in Istanbul’s history. The Khedive’s Palace a stunning blend of Art Nouveau and Ottoman styles stands proudly on the Asian side of the Bosphorus. Completed in 1907 it was commissioned by Abbas II the last Khedive of Egypt and Sudan.

Abbas II unlike his predecessors sought stronger ties with the Ottoman Empire. He saw this as a way to challenge British influence in Egypt and Sudan. His several visits to Istanbul led him to build this summer residence. A Slovenian architect Antonio Lasciac along with Italian architect Delfo Seminati designed the palace. It’s a testament to Abbas’s ambition and vision.

The Khedive’s Palace boasts a unique high square tower visible from across the Bosphorus. The palace itself is 1000 square meters of opulence. It features intricate carvings of fruits flowers and hunting animals reflecting European tastes. Stained glass windows adorn the walls. A historic steam-operated elevator takes you to the rooftop terrace. The palace’s grounds are equally impressive. A vast rose garden one of the largest in Istanbul adds to the beauty. There are additional fountains and pools enhancing the serene atmosphere.

The palace’s interior is just as remarkable. Several ground-floor rooms surround a central hall. One large hall features a magnificent fireplace. Two grand bedrooms grace the upper floor. Abbas’s unofficial wife Javidan Hanım played a key role in the palace’s development overseeing interior design and garden layout. Her memoirs detail her involvement.

After Abbas II’s deposition in 1914 the palace served various purposes. In 1937 Mustafa Kemal Atatürk ensured the city of Istanbul acquired it. After a period of neglect the Touring and Automobile Club of Turkey restored the palace. It opened to the public in 1984. For a time it housed a restaurant hotel and cafe. Today it is managed by the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality. It can host large events meetings and even serves as a venue for the annual Istanbul Tulip Festival.

The Khedive’s Palace is more than a beautiful building. It represents a unique moment of architectural and political history. It reflects the aspirations of a Khedive striving for independence and the enduring legacy of Istanbul’s rich past. Its beauty and history continue to enthrall visitors today.
