Was it fate, or destiny, that led Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan to become such an influential figure? Today we stand at Khalifa B. It is a place that subtly echoes the profound impact he had on the United Arab Emirates.
Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan served as the second president of the UAE. He ruled from November 2004 until his death in May 2022. He was also the ruler of Abu Dhabi. Khalifa was the eldest son of Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan. His father was the first president of the UAE.
From the late 1990s, Khalifa carried out some presidential duties. This was because his father was experiencing health issues. He officially succeeded his father on November 2, 2004. The Federal Supreme Council elected him as president of the UAE the next day.
As ruler, Khalifa attracted cultural and academic centers to Abu Dhabi. He helped establish the Louvre Abu Dhabi. New York University Abu Dhabi and Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi were also founded. He also established Etihad Airways.
Under Khalifa’s leadership, the UAE became a regional economic powerhouse. Its non-oil economy experienced substantial growth. He was considered a pro-Western modernizer. His calm approach helped the country navigate regional politics. He also strengthened ties with the United States and Israel.
During the financial crisis of 2007–2008, Khalifa directed billions of dollars in emergency funds to Dubai. On January 4, 2010, the world’s tallest structure was renamed Burj Khalifa. It was a tribute to his leadership.
In January 2014, Khalifa suffered a stroke. Afterwards, he maintained a lower profile in state affairs. His half-brother, Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, took on public affairs and daily decision-making.
Sheikh Khalifa was born on September 7, 1948. He was born in Al Ain, Abu Dhabi. His early education included studying Islam. He also had private tutors. Khalifa graduated from the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst.
When his father became emir of Abu Dhabi in 1966, Khalifa became the ruler’s representative in the Eastern Region. He also headed the Courts Department in Al Ain. In 1969, he was nominated as the crown prince of Abu Dhabi. He also became head of the Abu Dhabi Department of Defense.
After the UAE’s formation in 1971, Khalifa held several positions. He became the second deputy prime minister of the United Arab Emirates in 1973. He also chaired the Executive Council of Abu Dhabi from 1974.
In 1976, he helped found the Abu Dhabi Investment Authority. This organization strategically manages the emirate’s financial investments. It ensures a stable income for future generations. He also became deputy commander of the UAE Armed Forces.
Khalifa established the Abu Dhabi Department of Social Services and Commercial Building in 1981. He also created the Khalifa Housing Fund. This supported the construction of residential and commercial buildings.
Sheikh Khalifa died on May 13, 2022. He was 73 years old. He was buried at Al Bateen Cemetery in Abu Dhabi. His brother, Mohamed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, succeeded him.
In Al Ain, one of the largest mosques in the UAE was named after Sheikh Khalifa. It opened to the public on April 12, 2021.
Khalifa B stands as a reminder of Sheikh Khalifa’s legacy. He was a leader who modernized the UAE. He fostered economic growth and strengthened international relations. His contributions continue to shape the nation.
