“What does Awqaf mean?” It is a question I often hear from visitors standing before the General Authority of Islamic Affairs and Endowments. This federal agency plays a vital role in the United Arab Emirates. Let me share some insights into its significance.

The General Authority of Islamic Affairs and Endowments was founded on October 9 2006. It is often referred to as Awqaf. Awqaf is the Arabic term for religious endowment in Islamic law. The General Authority of Islamic Affairs and Endowments oversees Islamic affairs. It manages Sunni mosques in all Emirates except Dubai. Dubai has its own department called the Islamic Affairs and Charitable Activities Department.

Awqaf provides weekly guidance to Sunni imams. This guidance includes themes and content for their khutbahs which are sermons. They even publish a script every week. These khutbahs are then posted on the Awqaf website. Awqaf uses a three-tier system for imams. Junior imams closely follow the Awqaf khutbah script. Midlevel imams prepare sermons based on topics selected by Awqaf. Senior imams have the flexibility to choose their own subjects. Some Shia religious leaders also follow Awqaf-approved khutbahs.

The government funds and supports Sunni mosques. It employs all Sunni imams as government employees. Shia mosques are managed by the Jaafari Affairs Council. This council oversees mosques, community activities and financial matters. It also hires preachers for Shia mosques.

Awqaf operates toll-free call centers. These centers provide fatwas in Arabic, English and Urdu. Fatwas are religious rulings on various topics. These topics include worship, business, family and women’s issues. Callers can speak directly to a mufti who issues a fatwa based on Islamic teachings. Both female and male religious scholars are available.

Awqaf Abu Dhabi manages Abu Dhabi’s endowments. It aims to deliver long-term positive social and economic impact. This benefits both current and future generations. Awqaf Abu Dhabi operates under the Executive Council of Abu Dhabi. It regulates, preserves and develops endowed assets. It also ensures the distribution of profits, creating sustainable value.

Awqaf Abu Dhabi provides necessary permits for Endowment institutions. It hosts conferences and seminars. These events relate to the management of endowments and funds. These funds support minors, the interdicted and others in need.

Every initiative by Awqaf Abu Dhabi aims to drive social and environmental impact. Its strategies align with the vision of the UAE. It actively promotes generosity and embodies charity in every action. Awqaf Abu Dhabi leverages investment solutions. It develops innovative investment products. These products are tailored to the unique needs of the sector. The General Authority of Islamic Affairs and Endowments stands as a beacon of guidance, support and social responsibility in the United Arab Emirates. Its work touches countless lives and strengthens the fabric of society.
